Certificate in College Teaching

The Graduate Certificate in College Teaching is geared towards students interested in careers in academia that require teaching. Through course work, practica experiences, and a final portfolio its purpose is to prepare students interested in post-secondary education careers. I have found this certificate to be very instructive, and the teaching practica have been very influential in the development of my own teaching philosophy.

The Certificate in College Teaching required the following graduate coursework:
  • GRAD:7400    Practicum in College Teaching (Discrete Mathematics at William Penn University)
  • EDTL: 7380     Practicum in College Teaching (Educational Psychology)
  • GRAD 6217     Seminar in College Teaching
  • PSQF:6205     Design of Instruction

Sample Work
Teaching Practica
MATH 211: DISCRETE MATHEMATICS -- Fall 2017 (William Penn University)
  • Co-Editor of IBL Course Workbook: see introduction here

PSQF 1075: EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY -- Summer 2016
  • Observed teaching session on Social Cognitive Views of Learning and Motivation: see Prezi here
Design of Instruction
In the Design of Instruction course I designed a complete lesson plan on how to teach students in an introductory algebra course how to translate word statements into algebraic expressions and equations.

Certificate in Online Teaching

I became interested in the Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching  because of the changing landscape of academia. Learning management systems like Canvas by Instructure, online homework systems and online courses are becoming more and more commonplace. This program has equipped me to better use technology to enhance learning environments. I am also well positioned to solve issues related to online education as they pertain to accessibility and communication.

The Certificate in Online Teaching required the following graduate coursework:
  • PSQF:6215       Web-Based Learning
  • PSQF:6216       Tools and Utilities of Online Teaching
  • PSQF:6211        Universal Design and Accessibility for Online Instruction
  • PSQF:6205     Design of Instruction

Below I have provided sample work from two of the courses featured above.

For my capstone project for the Certificate in Online Teaching, I designed the first part of a four part course that serves as an introduction to abstract algebra for an undergraduate student. This course does not require a background in linear algebra, though it is strongly encouraged, and is designed to be eight weeks. Rather than have a semester long sixteen week course that covers rings and a second semester course that covers groups, in an online environment I determined it was best to split each topic into two eight week courses. This project was completed in the Fall 2017 semester. I have included the course proposal, syllabus, and interactive lecture notebook featuring video links for important concepts below.

Universal Design for Learning
Here I have included materials created in a course on Universal Design for the Certificate in Online Teaching.  This lesson on the product and quotient rule is designed for online instruction and includes a multiple choice review to be completed before watching the video, a pre-video quiz, and a post-video quiz. The instructional video is captioned and an accessible PDF version of the presentation is also available.
